Sony projector market research

Projection Screen Sensing Technology

We supported a major Japanese consumer tech company in validating an early-stage interactive projector through in-market research in Tokyo. We placed prototypes with participants across multiple demographics, collected recorded usage feedback, conducted in-home interviews in Japanese, and delivered a structured findings report with recommendations for next steps.

  • Research design and participant recruitment

We built the research plan, recruited participants across key demographic profiles, and managed field logistics to ensure the product was evaluated in realistic conditions.
  • In-home trials and Japanese interviews

Participants used the projector in their homes and documented their experience. We followed with in-home interviews in Japanese to capture behaviours, friction points, and perceived value.
  • Findings report and executive presentation

We synthesized the data into a detailed report and presented results to stakeholders at Sony headquarters in Tokyo, including clear themes, supporting evidence, and practical recommendations.

Validating the use case through real-world trials

The client needed feedback grounded in daily use; not in a controlled demo environment. The research focused on how people interacted with the product over time, what got in the way, and which contexts showed the strongest fit.

  • Coverage across participant types

We tested the product with families, single participants, and working professionals to understand how use and perceived value changed across living situations and routines.

  • Behaviour-focused insight, not speculation

The combination of at-home trials and interviews made it possible to separate initial novelty from repeatable value, and to identify what participants needed for the product to be useful day to day.

  • Clear synthesis for internal decision-making

Discussions with their research and development team focused on what to refine, what to test next, and which participant contexts indicated the best near-term opportunity.

  • Recommendations and next steps

The final reporting session at the client's headquarters included all top-level decision makers, to whom we presented findings and recommendations based on the results of the market research.
